I was comforted to learn I’m not alone in my opinion that helping an opposing team beat your team is, how can we say it…WRONG! “Nice guys finish last” will start the week with a bang.
Another boom coming soon may be the sound of Iranian assets being destroyed. Again today, Iranian President Ahmadinejad restated Iran’s determination to proceed with uranium enrichment. Coupled with Iran’s continued assistance to our enemies in Iraq, such obstinacy in the face of U.N. sanctions might explain the presence of the super-carrier Abraham Lincoln in the Persian Gulf. Sound familiar?
Five years late, we are beginning to vigorously pursue and destroy the Mahdi army, al Sadr’s not-so rag-tag power base. Better late than never, and better now than later. The eight-square mile slum that is home to the militia is a military strategist’s nightmare. The streets are too narrow for tanks to negotiate, and house-to-house combat too costly for war-weary Americans. So, we are relying on massive air-strikes to wipe out enemy “command and control” networks, a successful tactic that is also killing non-combatant civilians.
California’s budget deficit is worse than we were told, now projected at some $20 billion over the next 18 months. Politicians in Sacramento are calling for increased taxes; maybe the Nevada desert doesn’t look so bad after all. ”Everyone” knows that over-spending is the problem, but apparently “everyone” doesn’t bother to vote. Californians seem to have a limitless capacity to endure inept political leadership.
We’ll also keep a sharp eye on economic developments. Now that a few good signs are appearing – the unemployment rate dropped to 5% and far fewer jobs were lost last month than was anticipated – we’ll see if the doom and gloom prognosticators change their tune.
