Jerry,
My brother moved to Texas three years ago. He has a hectic and rewarding job with The Sonic Company. After living in California and Florida, he bought his first house and an additional 4 acres of rural land for future retirement. Texas is by no means an island unto itself, but compared to California, well, there is no comparison to California. CA is drowning in debt, has politicians who use taxpayers money to pay for Michael Jackson's funeral, who bend over to kiss the ass of every state union, including the teachers union, IS STILL without a budget and some $9 Billion in the red from last year!
I think moving to Texas might be a good plan to consider! (And they LOVE the 2nd Amendment)
