Included in President Obama’s healthcare proposal is the onerous notion of paying for abortions with taxpayer money. Until now, the federal government has had the good sense to understand just how repugnant abortion is to many Americans. While defending a woman’s right to chose, neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton proposed government-funded abortions. However, Obama’s hard charge to the left now includes the possibility of making all tax-paying Americans complicit in the murder of the unborn. This may become a bridge too far for Obama if the initial reaction of pro-life advocates is any indication.
Randall Terry, Founder of Operation Rescue, put the matter in stark relief just yesterday. Announcing a press conference to be held next Tuesday (July 21st) in Washington, DC, Terry didn’t pull any punches. “Let all those in government be warned: They cannot order people to pay for the murder of babies, and betray God Himself, without horrific consequences,” said an incensed Perry according to PRNewswire.com. Perry continued:
“Please understand: neither I, nor any thinking person wants the convulsions that would inevitably come from such a government policy — the decision to force Americans to pay for the murder of their neighbor. Nevertheless, the sheer horror and frustration of such an evil policy will lead some people to absolutely refuse to pay their taxes. And I believe — if my reading of history from America and around the world is correct — that there are others who will be tempted to acts of violence. If the government of this country tramples the faith and values of its citizens, history will hold those in power responsible for the violent convulsions that follow.”
Yikes. I haven’t heard that kind of talk since Al Sharpton’s “No justice, no peace” blathering. However, Terry may have his finger on the pulse of America’s conscience. Since 1973, millions of Americans have chafed under the dictates of Roe v. Wade. We are convinced that America is allowing a holocaust that dwarfs the killing of Jews during World War II. Those of us who care to think about the carnage don’t let a day pass without remembering the more than 3,000 babies killed every 24 hours in the United States. With the total of murdered infants approaching 50,000,000, many are saying “Enough!” at the very time President Obama plans to use our money to kill even more innocents. Terry’s pre-vision of a powder keg is spot on.
The Declaration of Independence contains the following glimpse into Thomas Jefferson’s revolutionary soul: “…when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.” While it certainly can be argued that the federal government’s abuse of the citizenry hasn’t yet risen to “absolute despotism,” forcing us to partake in the act of murder carries with such a demand a moral imperative all its own.
In deciding what courses of action are prudent and just in the face of our government’s request to fund abortions with our money, history does serve as a guide. Many Germans living in the 1930s suddenly realized that their government had become a murderer. However, too few took decisive action when opposition was possible. The scattered and unorganized opponents who spoke publicly against Hitler’s policies were rounded up, imprisoned, or killed. By the time Hitler’s power was complete even the Army couldn’t stop him. Therefore, if opposition to government-funded abortion is to be effective, millions of Americans must commit to the cause now.
But is this the time for violent revolution, or even refusal to pay taxes? While there remain avenues for redress of grievances, should a people rise up against a duly elected government? These vexing questions have no easy, pat answers. Jefferson also wrote these words of caution in the Declaration of Independence: “Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established, should not be changed for light and transient causes; and, accordingly, all experience [has] shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.” So, perhaps the better part of valor is to just let the wheels of government turn. They’ll figure it out and do the right thing. Honey, can you get me another diet Coke? Perhaps, as most Americans do most of the time, it’s just better not to think about it. After all, willful ignorance worked for many Germans, for awhile.
However, standing back from the political and theoretical questions for a moment, I again consider the children. Probably more than a hundred died while I wrote this. That brings this all down to the basics, doesn’t it? Right and wrong. Good and evil. Obama wants to kill more babies with my money. Allowing him to do so will reduce me to a co-conspirator in America’s darkest chapter. Therefore, I have but one option: opposition. Appropriately expressing this position is another thing. Non-payment of taxes is a given. Beyond that, perhaps it’s time to lock and load.
