Global Freezing

Al Gore dodges a tough question:

Record low temperatures in Montana, Colorado and Idaho are yet another indication that the hysterical predictions of catastrophic global warming are a lot of hot air. While Al Gore and the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) keep promising rising temperatures and calling for industry killing policies, other true believers in global warming are maintaining a low profile. The reason is simple: it’s freezing out there.

How cold is it? Here’s a recent sampling of weather related news stories:

The Associated Press on October 11th reported, “Record low temperatures in southwestern Idaho are threatening to destroy at least a portion of this season’s crop of seed potatoes. ’It’s over,’ Larry Van Dyke, who owns Van Dyke Farms in Townsend, told the Bozeman Chronicle. He says when it’s this cold for too long, the frost penetrates and the taters are toast.”

Montana’s News Station.com, a CBS affiliate, released this chilled account of Big Sky Country weather the same day. “Temperatures in parts of Western Montana were near zero overnight and record lows were set in Missoula, Kalispell and Butte on Sunday. Missoula’s official low temperature of 10 degrees Saturday broke a 36-year-old record. Kalispell was just 5 degrees, well below the previous record of 16 degrees set in October of 1987.”

Gaining national attention because of the post-season play of the Colorado Rockies, ESPN explained why Game 3 of the Phillies-Rockies playoff had to be postponed. “A cold front moved into Denver overnight, dropping temperatures into the teens with record lows for the date. Coors Field was covered with a thin layer of snow and ice…the cold front easily broke the record low for the date of 25 degrees set in 1905.” National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Thaler said, ”We crushed the record: 17 today…up in the foothills it’s even colder.”

NBC’s Andrew Greiner issued this warning to Chicagoans on October 8th: “Snow could be coming to town as early as this weekend. If the snow sticks, it would be the earliest recorded measurable snowfall in Chicago. What’s worse than the snow is the below freezing temperatures that are expected to accompany it.”

The frigid weather caused officials to yank marching bands from parades for fear the kids would slip and fall or get sick. If it’s this cold in the first half of October, the dead of winter could prove positively Siberian for much of North America. Similar reports have come in from around the world. Here’s the naked truth: the earth has entered a cooling trend.

The BBC’s Paul Hudson bothered to check the facts and filed this report on October 9th. “Average temperatures have not increased for over a decade. The warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but 1998. So what on earth is going on? What is really interesting at the moment is what is happening to our oceans. They are the earth’s great heat stores. In the last few years [the Pacific Ocean] has been losing its warmth and has recently begun to cool down.” Mr. Hudson concludes we may be in for 30 years of cooler weather.

In light of more than a decade of near-panic prognostications of doom and gloom by global warming hucksters, the cold weather recorded during the same time period should be humorous. However, the battle over whether man’s activities are threatening the planet and what to do about it is anything but funny. There is too much at stake for frivolity.

Global Warming proponents (aka Climate Change advocates) want to disable America’s ability to produce cheap energy and hamstring our industrial capacity. President Obama’s Cap and Trade legislation would do nothing less than cripple America’s ability to compete in the global marketplace. The United Nations has big plans to transfer enormous wealth from America and Western Europe to Third World nations, all in the name of saving the planet from global warming.

A growing bevy of scientists, shamed into admitting the truth, are calling on the UN and other global warming advocates to come clean. Typical is a letter sent to the IPCC in April of 2008. The authors, including a Human Ecology Nobel Peace Prize winner, didn’t beat around the bush.  Addressed to Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the IPCC, the missive begins, “We are writing to you and others associated with the IPCC position — that man’s CO2 is a driver of global warming and climate change — to ask that you now in view of the evidence retract support for the current IPCC position and admit that there is no observational evidence in measured data going back 22,000 years or even millions of years that CO2 levels (whether from man or nature) have driven or are driving world temperatures or climate change.”

Global Warming has never been about saving the planet, but redistributing its wealth. Here’s a bulletin for radical environmentalists the world over. First, we will not let you steal our money. Americans have earned it and have a right to keep it. Second, any country on earth can generate its own wealth by following the tried and true economic principles of free-market capitalism. The Third World should take a lesson from Smith Barney. Make your money the old-fashioned way: earn it.
