My mother’s favorite line to me was always, “Emily, you’re not the only pebble on the beach.” That’s an English saying. It wasn’t about me. She and my dad also gave me a lot of responsibility at a very early age and then had the confidence I could do what was asked of me. I sometimes think that at school and at home we require too little from our children. They need to do their part for the family.
