It’s nice to know big time politicos can mess up like rookies. First, Bill Clinton retells his wife’s Bosnia lies by adding some of his own. I guess legendary liars do not like to be upstaged. Then, Barack Obama, commenting on small-town Pennsylvanian’s lack of jobs, uttered this revealing gem, “It’s not surprising when they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” Hillary, who no doubt holds the exact same opinion, was critical of Obama’s elitism. “I don’t think it helps to divide our country into one America that is enlightened and one that is not,” harrumphed Mrs. Clinton. In private, Hillary advised Obama to stick to the more traditional Marxist divisions of proletariat and bourgeois.
The airline debacle is continuing unabated. Question: What has changed during the last couple weeks? Answer: The FAA was found asleep in the cockpit. The FAA’s cozy relationship with airlines is now history, and as usual the flying public is paying the biggest price as the government finally does its job. This story goes to the heart of a major problem with government oversight; who oversees the overseers?
Whack job nut-cases with nothing better to do are trying to disrupt the traditional circumnavigation of the Olympic torch as it makes its way to Beijing. Protesters are livid over Chinese human rights violations. Fine, but why wreck the Olympics, one of the few opportunities available for worldwide peaceful interchange, to bellyache about a decades-old problem? As expected, average Chinese are taking great umbrage over the roughing up of a crippled Chinese torchbearer in Paris. I mean really, can’t the French stick to picking on people with two legs? The do-more-harm-than-good crowd should leave the Olympic games alone.
How about them Dodgers? Besides replacing Grady Little with Joe Torre, the Big Blue Crew did little to improve their team over the winter. Ethier, Kemp, Martin and the other young Dodgers are good but not great, and the older guys like Jeff Kent are, well, older. Paying Andruw Jones $36 million for two years of non-production has to rank among the world’s worst investments. With the season’s first ten games in the books, Jones is batting .114 with 4 hits, 0 home runs, 0 runs scored, and 1 RBI. No offense, but a blind paraplegic couldn’t do much worse.
